Deildartunguhver

Your West Iceland adventure will start with a convenient pickup from your accommodation in Reykjavik. The tour takes the scenic route from the capital past Mount Esja and then by tunnel deep under Hvalfjordur to the gateway to West Iceland. We’ll make a short stop in Borgarnes for refreshments and to take in the astonishing views across the broad fjord there.

Hraunfossar

Hraunfossar, a magnificent series of waterfalls that runs for nearly a kilometer across the Hallmundarhraun lava field. Hraunfossar translates as the “Lava Waterfalls”, but nowadays only crystal-clear waters rush over the edges of rugged volcanic cliffs, fed from the nearby Langjokull glacier and tumbling into the Hvita (White) river. It’s an extraordinary opportunity to see countless waterfalls cover such a large area, with several viewing platforms allowing you to enjoy them from different perspectives.

You will visit Deildartunguhver, famed as the most powerful hot springs in Europe. It produces more than 180 liters of boiling hot water per second! You can feel the fierce power of Mother Nature as you walk safely on boardwalks.

Hraunfossar

You will also see the great Hraunfossar, a stunning series of waterfalls formed by several rivers running a distance of about 900m across the Hallmundarhraun lava field, created a thousand years ago by a volcano erupting under the nearby Langjokull glacier.

Viðgelmir Lava Cave

The highlight of the tour is a trip to the magnificent Vidgelmir Lava Cave. Nearly 1600 meters long, the cave takes you deep inside a lava flow, filled with stunning stalactites and stalagmites, fascinating ice and lava formations and multi-colored rocks. The spa is located in a lava field near Grindavík and in front of Mount Þorbjörn on Reykjanes Peninsula, in a location favourable for geothermal power, and is supplied by water used in the nearby Svartsengi geothermal power station.

You will be picked up at your hotel/guesthouse around noon and you will be on your way to the famous Golden Circle and Geysir.
We will drive through the farming heartland with an abundance of history. Here is where the most dramatic events of the Sagas took place.

Thingvellir National Park

Shortly after departure from Reykjavik, we will enter the Thingvellir National Park. This is where Alþingi or the Althing Parliament, one of the oldest democratic legislative bodies, was established in the year 930 AD.

Geysir Sputing Hot Spring

On the way, you will visit Geysir and Strokkur, one of only a few areas in the world where you can witness a spouting hot spring. This is truly a unique phenomenon you will never forget. Gullfoss or the Golden Waterfall is truly one of the most beautiful creations of mother nature.

Blue Lagoon

The Blue Lagoon is a magnificent geothermal site with the world’s finest natural spa. People come a long way to get into this turquoise-colored geothermal water. Besides the unique water, the surroundings of the Lagoon are magnificent. Some people say it is like “out of this world”.

The day starts with your pick-up in Reykjavik. We then head out of the capital area to the Golden Circle. The Golden Circle has many beautiful sights to offer, but at the same time, most of the places are historically important as well. We have this tour planned to make the best out of your day.

Þingvellir

Our first stop is at Þingvellir, the place of the first Icelandic parliament. The first parliament was established there in 930 AD and it is, therefore, the oldest one in Europe. Besides all the history you can also see the Mid-Atlantic ridge. This is the split of the tectonic plates that divides Europe from North America.

Geysir

After that, we stop at Geysir. This “water puddle” gives its name to all the other Geysers in the world. “Strokkur”, the little brother of Geysir, is still active today and he erupts every 5-8min and it is truly a big spectacle.

Gullfoss

Last but not least is Gullfoss, the golden waterfall. In the summertime, up to 130.000 l/s are running down this powerful waterfall. In good weather conditions, we are also able to see Langjökull glacier as well.

Friðheimar Tomato Farm

Iceland is well known for its geothermal energy. We don’t only use it to heat our houses, we also use it to grow vegetables in greenhouses. Friðheimar Tomato Farm is probably the best place to experience it and that’s why we decided to have our Lunch stop here (please note: Lunch is not included in the tour price). We will take a short tour through the greenhouse before we are able to enjoy the food.

Secret Lagoon

The day isn’t over yet. There is no better way to end a great day with a relaxing swim in geothermal water. Your guide will drive you to a thermal pool called “Gamla Laugin” (The Secret Lagoon). It was formed in 1891 and is still a popular place for all the locals in the area. It is therefore the oldest swimming pool in the country with a constant temperature of 38/40 °C, thanks to the hot waters from surrounding geothermal activity.

We will be driving with a lot of stops along the way. We will of course guide you to the must-see places but you are really the boss, so we stop whenever you feel like it.

Winter operation we lend you crampons for safe exploring

During winter the could be a lot of snow and ice at the stop site so we will have available for you the necessary equipment; such as crampons for glacier walking (also in the summertime).

The duration of this tour is around eight to ten hours. We will cover most of the South Coast gems that you hear all about all the time. After the tour, we will drop you off at your hotel or at your convenience.

We leave the capital area behind and we will soon reach the countryside. Along the way, we can see Hellisheiðarvirkjun, the geothermal power plant for Reykjavik. It is located in Hengill, a high-temperature area that provides the capital area with hot water and electricity. Steam is billowing up everywhere.

Expect a spectacular view

As we venture south, we will drive through the typical lowlands of this area. In the distance, we can already see the mountains and the ice cap of the Mýrdalsjökull glacier. On sunny days it is also possible to see the Westman Islands shimmering in the Atlantic Ocean.

Skógafoss Waterfall

Our first stop is Skógafoss waterfall. It is one of the most iconic waterfalls in the country and was even featured in Game of Thrones. His 60m drop will keep you speechless for sure. Your guide will tell you all about the hidden treasure chest behind the waterfall and with some luck, you will be the first one to find it.

Reynisfjara – Black Beach

Now it’s time to hit the road again. After a short ride, we stop at Reynisfjara black sand beach. The beach was once rated as one of the 10 most beautiful places in the world and as soon as you put a foot on the beach, you will know why. Basalt columns and the well-known Reynisdrangar rock formations await you. Your guide will tell you all the interesting stories and sagas that are connected to this place.

Vík í Mýrdal

Having now reached our most southern point, this charming fishing village is the center of the southern region. On the tour, we will pay a visit to the church where we can enjoy a great view of the coastline.

Sólheimajökull Glacier

Besides waterfalls, Iceland is also known for glaciers. 11% of the country is covered by ice. Sólheimajökull is an outlet glacier coming down the fourth biggest glacier of Iceland, called Mýrdalsjökull.

Seljalandsfoss and Gljufrabui Waterfalls

Heading back in the direction of Reykjavik, our last stop will be the ever-popular Seljalandsfoss waterfall. The waterfall lays underneath the well-known Eyfjallajokull, the volcano that erupted in 2010. If conditions allow, we take a walk behind the waterfall’s curtain before paying a visit to its nearby cousin Gljúfrabúi, found hidden from view in the mountainside.

Kerid volcanic crater

Kerid is a volcanic crater that is located in the Grímsnes area. It is part of the Western Volcanic Zone, which includes the Reykjanes peninsula and the Langjökull Glacier. The caldera of the crater is well intact and about 55m deep and 270m wide. Another remarkable feature is the aquamarine blue water of the lake that can be found in the crater.

The hike is approximately 2,5h long with 1,5h spend on the glacier.

This PADI Dry Suit Speciality course includes a theory session, one confined water training dive, followed by two Open Water dives with an experienced Dry Suit Instructor.
On day two we will then be ready to complete two dives in Silfra Fissure which is known to be one of the best dive sites available in the world!
Silfra, frequently rated as one of the worlds top ten dive sites, is located between the tectonic plates of Europe and America. With up to 100 meters of underwater visibility, Silfra is truly a mesmerizing site, not to be missed by any diver.
